With the newly announced lease of more than 100,000 square feet of office space at the Irvine-based Spectrum Terrace, Amazon has unveiled plans to bring 800 tech jobs into the city.
Along with Irvine, the tech and shipping giant has also announced plans to expand in San Diego, and Santa Monica.
Irvine Mayor Farrah Khan, who helped establish the newly formed Irvine Innovation Council, welcomed Amazon’s expansion into Irvine, adding that she was thrilled to increase the growing number of tech businesses and jobs within the city.
“Economic development, especially job creation, is critical to our city’s growth. Amazon’s expansion of its tech hub in Irvine is a testament to the fantastic talent pool and high quality of life our city has to offer,” Khan said. “Investments like Amazon’s act as a vote of confidence for Irvine and these 800 new corporate and tech roles will continue to unlock economic opportunity for our community.”
This is not Amazon’s first venture in Irvine. In 2020, Amazon Fresh opened inside the MarketPlace shopping center on Jamboree Ave.
Holly Sullivan, Amazon’s vice president of worldwide economic development explained that as Amazon continues to grow in Southern California, it plans to focus more on product development from Alexa products to Amazon playables.
“Communities across California have welcomed Amazon over the past decade and have seen firsthand how our investments can unlock new opportunities for their neighbors and local economies. We’ve created more than 170,000 jobs across the state and are committed to continue investing here,” Sullivan said. “These 2,500 new jobs include roles building cloud infrastructure, improving the Alexa experience, and designing cutting edge video games. They’re a fantastic opportunity for Californians of all backgrounds to join Amazon and build a successful career.”
In terms of local needs in Irvine, Amazon has updated the job listings portion of its website with several new job listings in Irvine updated on May 2 and May 3. Positions include Software Development Engineer, Alexa Kids Experience and Gameplay Engineer.
